Since 2019 and later in 2021, with the Fit for 55% package, the EU has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 net emissions by at least 55% by 2030. In this sense, heat pumps have been unequivocally recognised by the EU, with new legislation and also thanks to the IEA report on energy efficiency, as essential technologies for the energy transition, and indeed 3 million units were sold in 2022 alone, as reported in the European Heat Pump Market and Statistics Report 2023.

Protagonists of exponential growth, heat pumps have broken every record in Europe, with only ten countries covering 87% of the market volume.

In Italy, the European Heat Pump Association recorded an increase of +35.2% in 2022 compared to the previous year, with a total of 513,535 units sold. The main application area of heat pumps to date has been mainly residential, but EHPA is also promoting their use in large commercial and industrial plants, as a fundamental milestone in the decarbonisation process for a zero-emission Europe.

Residential and tertiary: When to heat and cool with heat pumps

Today, heat pumps can be used to heat and cool residential and tertiary environments, such as medium-sized businesses and shops. The reversible technology allows, in fact, by means of a simple valve, to exchange the functions of the evaporator and the condenser, so that the same machine is able to heat and cool.

This combination makes the solution even more convenient, as it allows to amortise the investment in less time respect to just using it for heating.

Frascold, due to the high costs required for the application of reversible high-temperature heat pumps in renovations, frequently composed of hybrid or dual-stage compression systems, offers the innovative series of high temperature piston compressors, an ideal alternative to simplify the installation and thus reduce its cost.
Our new ATEX HT series, designed for use with propane, can produce domestic hot water at higher temperatures, i.e., up to 80 °C, with a nominal pressure up to 40 bar.

Frascold opens up to innovation in the industrial field

There are already numerous applications of heat pumps in the commercial and industrial field, including pool water air conditioning, drying, low-temperature technological processes in the agricultural and food industry and in the pharmaceutical field.

Combined with large storage boilers, heat pumps with traditional compressors can also be used exclusively for the production of heat for space heating and domestic hot water. In this case, water temperatures up to 55°C. In this sense, heat pumps represent a further great opportunity, when applied to the production processes of hot water for washing components or hot air for drying or heating food.

In industry, the challenge lies in the need to have heat pumps capable of producing high temperatures above 100°C and high thermal capacities to meet the need to correctly manage processes that require hot air, water or steam for the processing of materials, also recovering waste heat from industrial processes, data centres or wastewater. In addition, for district heating, district heating networks, large heat pumps are required to provide temperature rise on large water flow volumes, higher than those expected in residential settings.
